ECU Tuning & Engine Calibration

Tuning is part of BG Automotive, not a side job. I calibrate engines the same way I diagnose them: log the data, change one thing, and log again.

What I tune

How I approach a tune

Before I touch a calibration, I check that the engine is healthy. That means a scan for codes, a look at fuel trims and live data, and checks for vacuum or boost leaks. Tuning around a mechanical problem just hides it. I save your original file, make changes in small steps, and confirm each one with datalogs: wideband air-fuel, knock, and timing. You get an engine that runs right and keeps running right, not just a peak number.

California and emissions

In California, changing the emissions calibration on a street-registered vehicle requires a CARB Executive Order. I'll walk you through what's legal for your vehicle. Tunes without CARB approval are for race and off-road vehicles only.

Tuning questions

Is a tune smog legal in California?

Only if it has a CARB Executive Order for your vehicle, or the vehicle isn't street-registered. I'll tell you straight what's legal for your car before we start. Anything without CARB approval is for race and off-road vehicles only.

Can you fix a tune someone else did?

Often, yes. I start by reading what's in the ECU, logging how the engine is actually running, and checking fuel, timing, and knock data before changing anything.

Will tuning hurt my engine?

A careful tune that fits the engine's parts and fuel shouldn't. The risk comes from aggressive timing, lean fueling, or skipping the health check first. I check the engine before tuning and keep a copy of your original file.
